It was built in 1847, in the first half of the 19th century, making it the 8th oldest of the 28 in Connecticut with a recorded construction date; the light characteristic is recorded as decorative light, with a range of about 10 nautical miles; it guards Long Island Sound; it was deactivated in 1877; the structure is built of brownstone.

Status check, 2026-11: This brownstone tower has been inactive since 1877, when Southwest Ledge Light replaced it, and now stands in New Haven's Lighthouse Point Park. Height is left null because sources give 65, 70 or 80 ft. One source says 1845, but most say 1847, the year the money was approved. Five Mile Point Light is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It stands at 41.2489° N, 72.9039° W.
